Covid-19 Leadership Series
Prior to 2020, physician burnout figures in the US had already been hovering at around 50% for many specialties. Just when successes in minimizing burnout were being made nationally, along came COVID-19.
On March 11, 2020, after huge outbreaks in China, Iran, Spain, Italy and elsewhere, the WHO formally declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Healthcare teams globally tried to understand the novel coronavirus and respond as effectively as possible to treat and save the lives of patients, as well as the lives of fellow caregivers. However, most teams were left with disconnected fragments of information that left them bewildered in terms of positive steps forward.
With that in mind, we’ve been hosting the COVID-19 Leadership Series to bring together healthcare experts with different backgrounds from different geographies to engage in collaborative dialogues to help us collectively piece together information which will help us move forward in the most effective way possible.
During the last few weeks of our Zoom leadership series, we brought together multi-disciplinary physician leadership groups – cardiologists, hospitalists, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, pharmacists, urologists, family medicine, anesthesiologists, more – giving updates from most states featuring New York City, Seattle, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wash. DC, London, Manchester, Singapore, Italy and elsewhere…
Join us for confidential, group dialogues where you can talk about your experience with a group of like-minded physician leaders:
• Find out what is going on at the MACRO (global, national, regional, local), system-level AND at the front lines of patient care, across specialties
• Share stories and support you/ family, your team, your organization
• Identify and share industry trends as they become visible
• Discuss what the post COVID-19 healthcare industry will look like

TOPICS DISCUSSED
Understanding “Implicit Bias” or “Unconscious Bias”
In this moment of pandemic, business upheaval and heightened social unrest, how is implicit bias impacting you and your family? … your clinician colleagues/staff, your patients? Hospital? Healthcare community?
At the very least, Implicit bias can affect both perception and (clinical) decision making, and studies show that implicit bias is significantly related to patient-provider interactions and treatment decisions.
Understanding and reducing bias can help individuals improve their communications, their decision-making and their relationships. During these times of uncertainty and social unrest, these skills are critical and can have far-reaching local, national and global impact.
Join Dr. Mike Valentine (former President American College Cardiology) and James McKenna for an interactive dialogue with forum participants, sharing experiences and best practices.

Leading through Uncertainty
During our May 2nd dialogue, we were fortunate to have Dr. Jack Lewin (Chairman, National Coalition on Health care; formerly CEO, American College Cardiology) with us and Dr. Ciro Indolfi (Governor of the Italian Chapter of the ACC). They offered current perspectives on two areas of the world hardest hit (New York City and Italy) and lessons learned, for all of us to bear in mind as we move forward.
